Why YBPA
• Boys are scoring lower than girls in reading and writing, and the lead that boys once had in science and math has now virtually disappeared.
• Overrepresentation of boys in special education (by time they reach middle school they make up 73% of students labeled learning disabled and 76% of students labeled emotionally disturbed)
• Boys are three times more likely to be labeled ADHD/ADD than girls.
• Gifted boys can be quite misunderstood and often labeled as troublemakers while expressing their creativity in the classroom. This often causes the talents and gifts to be overlooked.
• Boys are less likely to take challenging courses, earn good grades, or be active in school.
• Boys are most likely to drop out of school and less likely than their female counterparts to attend college.
• Boys in coeducational classes are more likely to show off and act in stereotypical ways when girls are present.
• In single gender classes boys tend to relax, focus on learning in ways that are more comfortable for them, and take more chances with things that are not comfortable for them.
YBPA (a 501c3) is the first academy in Washtenaw County with instruction developed to address the learning styles unique to boys, with emphasis on increasing their desire to learn and their love of God. The mission is simple: Preparing ordinary boys to become extraordinary men! YBPA educates young men and prepares them to become life long learners and productive community members http://ypsilantiboysacademy.org. The school serves Pre-K – 7th grades.
