Why YBPA
- Boys are scoring lower than girls in reading and writing, and the lead that boys once had in science and math has now virtually disappeared.
- Overrepresentation of boys in special education (by time they reach middle school they make up 73% of students labeled learning disabled and 76% of students labeled emotionally disturbed)
- Boys are three times more likely to be labeled ADHD/ADD than girls.
- Gifted boys can be quite misunderstood and often labeled as troublemakers while expressing their creativity in the classroom. This often causes the talents and gifts to be overlooked.
- Boys are less likely to take challenging courses, earn good grades, or be active in school.
- Boys are most likely to drop out of school and less likely than their female counterparts to attend college.
- Boys in coeducational classes are more likely to show off and act in stereotypical ways when girls are present.
- In single gender classes boys tend to relax, focus on learning in ways that are more comfortable for them, and take more chances with things that are not comfortable for them.
